American singer/songwriter Ne-yo was in New Kingston, Jamaica this past Tuesday.
Ne-yo was already in Jamaica for Caribbean Fashion Week and for the launch of his Caribbean music label, Compound Island, a version of his label Compound Entertainment. Ne-yo ‘s goal with the new label is to broadcast and give international exposure to new Jamaican talents and Jamaica, the land that gave the world Reggae music.
“Reggae music is global music; you can go anywhere to hear it. You can go to Australia and hear it,” said Ne-Yo. Compound Island, he said, will give fresh talent from Jamaica a chance to showcase their skills through an online talent search for for singers, groups, songwriters and producers .
Ne-yo and his team choose Jamaica for their Compound Island project because of the island strong musical heritage and for continued influence on contemporary music, its rich legacy of producing some of the world’s biggest recording artists, be it in notoriety or album sales.
Ne-Yo’s manager, Tishawn Gayle stated that Jamaica has an heavy influence on the music industry when it comes to setting trends and said his company was also about teaching the business of entertainment.
