February is Reggae Month, Black History Month, and is also Bob Marley’s Earth Strong month.
The Department of Literature in English invited, on Feb 10 , Damian Junior Gong Marley, aka Gong Zilla , Bob Marley’s son, at the Mona Campus – University Of West Indies, for a speech, gathering a big crowd for a last minute thing.
Damian’s mom, Cindy Breakespeare, introduced him the UWI’s audience. The talk was staged to complement the Reggae poetry course taught by main Professor Carolyn Cooper.
Damian answered to a lot of questions, giving his views on what he considers talent, his idea of spirituality, he talked about his music and his family and he talked about his mother too. The audio is not at its best all the time and you will have to skip a couple of ads, but it’s worth listening.

Check him out! Damian Marley proved once again he is a great human being before being an incredible artist. He’s a musical genius that manages to stay real.
So no surprise he kept it real when asked all sort of questions. He was also asked what he thinks of Vybz Kartel, and he expressed admiration for Kartel’s talent, even though he does not agree with all his life choices.
He also went In to Deep in being born a Marley and all that it means stating that people needed to realize that success takes more than talent it takes hard work he remarked.
He also went in the relationship with his other brothers and with Stephen particularly underlining that is not just music that they do together.
Responsible for a long list of big tunes and a couple of Grammy Awards and having toured around the world intensively already in the past years, Damian Marley is a young veteran, a rebel, somebody that is able to pass to young -and less younger- generations the legacy of the past, while adding his own new elements with his music and words. A remarkable artist that also got wisdom. The youth understand that and they listened carefully to him.
