International reggae icon and Grammy Award Winner Buju Banton, real name Mark Myrie, is back before the court today for a hearing about the request of a new trial.

Buju will appear in a Tampa federal court this Wednesday, June 26, 2013.

The artist, who was convicted on trumped up drug and gun charges two years ago, could find out once and for all if Judge James S. Moody Jr. will grant his request for a new trial based on juror misconduct.

Judge Moody called the hearing to address the issue of seemingly rogue juror Terri Wright, whose ensuing antics have caused multiple delays in this curiously enduring case.

The Judge in Tampa, Florida has overturned the gun possession conviction against Dancehall star Buju Banton. The Grammy winning artist had returned to court to get a new trial following revelations that a juror had researched an aspect of the law during the trial.


James S. Moody Jr., theU.S. District Judge,. ruled that the gun charge be overturned as there was a case of jury misconduct. He also recommended the filing of criminal contempt charges against the juror.

Moody‘s ruling follows allegations that juror Terri Wright conducted improper research during the 2011 trial, since a South Florida newspaper reported that Wright, who was the jury fore woman, admitted to doing independent Internet research during the trial.

Moody also find juror Teri Wright in contempt after she lied to the court about researching the case during the high profile trial.
