One of the hippest places to go in Jamaica during the 1970s and early 1980s, was a Jah Love dance.

One of the artistes who helped put that sound system on the map was Brigadier Jerry with his hard-hitting cultural lyrics.

It’s 2022 and he’s still on top of his game. The aptly-titled “Original Culture DJ”, his latest song, hears the veteran toaster in fine form.

Released in August by Tad’s International Record, it is the lead single from his pending album which is due for release soon. “Original Culture DJ” is co-produced by Tad Dawkins Jr. and Tad Dawkins senior.

The song hears ‘Briggy’ making note of the global respect he has earned by keeping the music clean and giving praise to Jah Rastafari, something he has done throughout his career and for most of his life.

Like many Jamaican youth who came of age during the roots-reggae era of the 1970s, Brigadier Jerry discovered the message and ‘livity’ of Rastafari. His introduction to live music came with Stur Gav, the mighty sound system owned and operated by legendary toaster Daddy U Roy.

As his Rastafarian faith grew, Brigadier Jerry joined the ranks of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, the organization that owns Jah Love. It was with that ‘sound’ that he made his mark.

While he was popular at Jah Love dances, Briggy also made his mark as a recording artiste with hit songs like “Pain” and the patriotic “Jamaica Jamaica”.

Forty-odd years later, fans are still saluting the Brigadier. Take a listen to “Original Culture DJ” and you will hear why.
