Marcia-Griffiths Headlines Celebration To Honour Coronation Of Haile Selassie I

Internationally acclaimed Reggae singer, Marcia Griffiths, will headline this weekend’s celebratory concert in honor of the 82nd coronation of His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie I.

The fundraiser will be held on November 2 in Toronto, Canada, and this year’s staging is quite significant. As is the norm, the event is being put on by the Twelve Tribes of Israel, however, this year the flyer says that the concert is being held “in unity with all Mansions”, and including the Ethiopian African Black International Congress, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and the House of Nyabinghi.

According to singer Chardavid, aka Colin Levy, who is an integral part of the planning committee, it is important that all the Mansions come together in unity on this most important day in the Rastafarian calendar.

“We give thanks that once again we can enter the fulness of joy to celebrate the crowning of our Emperor and it’s important that we do it right. This is a day to show brotherly love and sisterly love and this concert is specifically designed for that. Starting with our own, we mark the significance of the day in unity and togetherness, but it is not about celebrating Rasta, it is about giving back to the world and educating others about our history,” Chardavid stated.

He noted that Marcia Griffiths did not hesitate when asked to do the show.

“Sister Marcia can always be counted on to do events such as these and I applaud her for her willingness to give back to others. This proceeds of this concert are for charity and she was pleased to be a part of the event, based on that,” Chardavid further explained.

The lineup for the event include also live appearances of Jay Douglas, Exco Levi, Tasha T, Orthodox Issachar, Donna Makeda, Fire Lion, Jah Cutta, Jah Kettle, Jah Chosen, Jemini, Empresses Tashai, Divine and Minott, Primo Green, King Ujah, Mystikk and Chardavid.

On November 2, 1930, Ras Tafari (Prince) Makonnen was crowned with the titles King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah and Emperor of Ethiopia, adopting the baptismal name Haile Selassie. Haile Selassie passed away on 27 August 1975.
