Good news for Dancehall stars Vybz Kartel and Shawn Storm and all their fans and supporters, the whole Gaza Nation is celebrating since they were finally granted leave to appeal to UK’s Privy Council.
Vybz Kartel, real name Adidja Palmer, and his co-accused, Shawn ‘Storm’ Campbell, Andre St John, and Kahira Jones, scored at last a good outcome in the Court of Appeal this past Friday when a judge granted them leave to take their case to the Privy Council.
This is an important step for the incarcerated dancehall king, let’s not forget that Vybz Kartel has been behind bars for the past decade and held hostage in the Jamaican court system.
Kartel and his four co accused lost their appeal this past April in Jamaica’s of this year and promised that they would have make everything possible to bring their case in front of the highest court, the Privy Council in United Kingdom.
While this is just the beginning of a long new battle in the court system, it’s still a positive and encouraging step toward freedom.
Vybz Kartel’s and co accused legal team will have to prove to the UK’s Privy Council the innocence of the accused in relation to the Clive “Lizard” Williams’ murder. The appeal could take one year or more.
The judgment, handed down in a virtual setting by Court of Appeal judge, Justice Nicole Simmonds, said,
“The applicants are granted conditional leave to appeal to her majesty in council the decision of the Court of Appeal delivered on 3rd and 17th of April 2020, pursuant to section 110 subsection 2B of the Jamaica constitution for consideration of the question below subparagraph 8. ‘
Does the charter of fundamental right and freedom affects the court’s authority to admit into evidence material acquired secured or polluted in breach of the rights and freedoms that the charter guaranteed and if so in what way.’”
Hopefully this last shot at freedom for Vybz Kartel, Shawn Storm and their co-accused will have a more positive and quicker outcome.
